Start with the course requirements
Ask which applications the course uses. A student writing assignments and attending online classes needs less graphics power than a student running engineering, architecture, statistics or media software. Buy for the actual software, not only for a processor badge.
Prioritise practical specifications
An SSD improves startup and application speed. Eight gigabytes of RAM can handle basic study work, while sixteen gigabytes gives more room for demanding software and multitasking. Confirm the processor generation, screen, webcam, Wi-Fi, keyboard and available ports.
Consider daily movement
A smaller laptop is easier to carry, but a larger screen may be more comfortable for design, spreadsheets and long reading sessions. Check the weight of both the laptop and charger.
Budget beyond the laptop
Allow for a protective sleeve, backup storage, software, maintenance and possible battery replacement. Request a receipt and understand the warranty before paying.
